spiralicious: Cereal Killer Mask (Hands off!)

Well its only been...over 4 months since I went to the HIM concert in Portland. So a review is much overdue. I did start and entry the day I came back but as you can tell it was never finished. Its the post labeled post in progress. This has been nagging me for awhile and now I finally have time. So here is what I recall based on notes I took after the concert, Mandy's post about the concert, some videos on youtube, and my own memory under a lovely cut.

First the playlist (not in order):
Buried Alive by Love
The Funeral of Hearts (was the last song)
Soul on Fire
Your Sweet Six Six Six
Join me (in Death)
Right Here in my Arms
Wicked Games
When Love and Death Embrace
Vampire Heart
Rip out the Wings of a Butterfly (2nd song)
Killing Loneliness
Behind the Crimson Door or Under the Rose (I'm not sure which one they played or if they played both but I know they played one of them)
Love in Cold Blood (1st song?)
Passion's Killing Floor
The Kiss of Dawn
Sleep Walking Past Hope
Dead Lover's Lane
Bleed Well

Now I'm not sure that is the whole playlist but it has to be close and like I said before it is not in the right order.

The concert was at the Crystal Ballroom in Portland, which is very lovely. It also means that I got to spend the day with Mandy! Hopefully I will talk about that more in another post. She also went to the concert with me.
By some small miracle we ended up only 15 feet from the stage. And by a bigger miracle we were able to keep our spot instead of being shoved further to the back. Not to brag but it was such an amazing spot. I could see all the guys clearly. All the facial expressions. The details of Ville's tattoos. Burton's cigarette. Linde's fingers. Of course it helped that I was actually wearing my glasses. The best part of course (for me) about our spot was that I was directly in front of Mige. Unfortunately, that also meant that I was also in direct line of an amp as well.
But it was worth it. (You can quit making that face now I'm done fangirling for the moment.)
The opening act was Bleeding Through. They weren't horrible but they also did not live up to my expectations. There, of course, was a mosh pit during Bleeding Through but it was small and didn't get too out of hand. Mandy and I managed to stay on the edge of it without losing our spots. We only got hit with part of it once and it was briefly. I did my best to make sure no one shoved or hit Mandy. She was a real trooper.
In between Bleeding Through and HIM there were these two drunk girls that were just shoving everyone else and causing havoc. They were trying to get to the front, of course, but there really was no way to get ahead of us because everyone in front of us was packed in like sardines. During Buried Alive by Love they caused a fist fight that ended quickly, less then a foot away from me. Then all of a sudden they became very well behaved.
At one point Ville told the story of Jonne (sorry If I have spelt her name wrong) puncturing his ear drum The night before the beginning of the 2005 US tour. He didn't identify her by name, but he did tell a long version of the story. He also brought up that Portland was the first concert on the last tour in 2005. I was there with Martini, for those that are interested. He also mentioned the j tattoo and made a joke saying it stands for Jesus and made a joke about going down on Jesus. Basically, it was a very long story that was several stories and when he got to the point he said there was no point. It was all an introduction to Bleed Well. He ended the story by saying "I hope the lady in question bleeds extremely well." He was also interupted by stuff thrown on stage. The first thing I noticed was A key lanyard (I thought it was a shoelace). Someone also threw money. That pleased Ville and he had to pause to comment on it and show it to Mige.
Later on someone threw a wrapped birthday present. Ville stopped to open it,(it was a book),and read the back cover to the crowd. It was The Artist's Survival Guide and he used it as an intro into Killing Loneliness.
At the end Ville gave his "closing remarks", or whatever you want to call them, when he introduced the last song. He basically said that they were going to leave on a sentimental note because they were "sentimental Finnish bastards" and then I missed the rest of the joke and the face Burton made but he said "the Viagra doesn't work anymore- I don't know what happened." I'm not sure what all of that was about and I haven't caught up with the valo_daily entries I have missed yet. But It was funny and I want to know.

Overall I enjoyed myself very much. I was so happy I got to go. I was a really good concert. Everyone in the band seemed happy, goofy, and interactive. The crowd was really into it. There were some minor sound problems but they didn't really detract from the whole experience. Also Mige had to adjust one of the lights at one point. Ville also did the mic in the mouth thing very briefly. I never thought I'd get to see that in person or so clearly. As usual Gas was the last to leave the stage and he threw his drumsticks into the audience and bowed.

I'm not sure how Mandy puts up with me.

Also there are photos, but even though we had a very nice spot, they were taken with a disposable camera and when I got them developed they did not give me a photo CD like I ordered. This means that they did not come out that well and they also did not edit well once I scanned them onto my computer. I will treasure them always but they are very bad. That is why I did not post them to valo_daily after the concert but they have been up on my facebook page for sometime now.
